Join the 2018 Build America Team

So you want to be a part of Build America this summer? Before you apply, here is what you can expect:

All potential team members must meet the following requirements: 

  • Be in good standing with your chapter
  • Have a 2.7 cumulative or previous semester GPA
  • Be an associate, active or alumnus of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity

Build America is like taking another class, it’s time consuming with fundraising. Here are the expectations that we have for all of our team members: 

  • Meet fundraising benchmarks
  • Communicate monthly with regional servicing director
  • All team members must attend an Ability Weekend in their region
  • All team members must be able to pass a drug screening prior to and during the event

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in removal from the team roster. 

Trip Information

  • Fundraising Minimum:  $4,000
  • Build America Important Dates & Timeline
    • Crew Training: TBD
    • Team Orientation (Boston, MA): Tuesday, June 12, 2018
    • Build America Arrival (Chicago, IL): Saturday, July 28, 2018
    • Crew Debrief (Charlotte, NC): Sunday, July 29 – Wednesday, August 1, 2018
     
  • BAM: Crew Member Positions* are offered as co-op and internship opportunities! Here are some of the opportunities we offer:
    • Construction

    • Photography
    • Videography
    • Health Services
    • Finance
    • Public Relations
    •  Social Media
    • Operations & Logistics
    • Management
    •  Journalism
    •  Many more!
      *(must be 21 prior to the start of the trip with a valid driver’s license)
     

Forms & Fees 

  • Registration Fee: $150 (This fee is paid to apply, it is only refundable if you are not accepted to the roster. If you are accepted and drop, you will not receive a refund.)
  • Security Deposit: $100 (This fee is paid to receive your fundraising page after being accepted to them team, it is refundable at the end of the event.)
  • Medical History Form: Team members must receive a full physical and medical exam
  • Motor Vehicle Report Release: All team members who are 21+ will submit an MVR form and be approved by The Ability Experience insurance carrier prior to acceptance
  • Insurance Card: All team members must have a form of health insurance

Mission Focus: The Ability Experience is committed to using shared experiences to support people with disabilities and developing the men of Pi Kappa Phi into servant leaders. We seek applicants who are committed to the mission and integrity of the organization.

Selection: Consideration will be given to those who have held positions demonstrating leadership potential, have contributed to their community, motivated to commit to the Build America experience, and those who will continue their involvement beyond completion of the event. Other factors include: class status, grade point average, chapter, and leadership experience.
