Orientation and Kick-Off Events

Orientation offers a chance for team members to get acquainted, learn about people with disabilities and participate in skills assessments, training rides and safety training to prepare them for the life-changing events ahead.

North Route

Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend the kick-off; however, it is important that any family or friends planning on coming to the San Francisco area understand that orientation is a retreat setting and team members will not be available to see family and friends until the kickoff dinner on Saturday, June 12. Most family and friends take this time to see some of the different sites around the Bay Area.

Crew Travel Information

Journey of Hope North Crew Members must arrive at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for Crew Training no later than 1:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. Transportation from SFO Airport to the team’s host hotel will be provided.

Cyclist Travel Information

Cyclists on North route must arrive at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for the Team Orientation no later than 2:00 p.m. PST on Thursday, June 10, 2021. Anyone driving or arriving prior to June 10 should report directly to the team’s host hotel (Embassy Suite SFO Waterfront, 150 Anza Blvd, Burlingame, CA 94010) by 2:00 p.m. PST on Thursday, June 10, 2021.

Bike Shipping Details

All cyclists should travel with their bikes. Most airlines allow you to check your bike box for the cost of a normal checked bag. Check the airline’s policy when booking your flight.

If you need help packing your bike, please contact your local bike shop. They should be able to provide you with a box for free or pack it for a small cost. Here is a video of how to pack a cardboard bike box yourself. Write your name on the outside of the box to be able to identify it at orientation.

Journey of Hope Kick-Off Dinner

The 2021 Journey of Hope North Kick-Off Dinner will be hosted by The Ability Experience on Saturday, June 12. Dinner will be held at Crissy Field in San Francisco.  This is event is a celebration of the journey that is about to begin as well as a detailed explanation of the next morning’s schedule of events.

Journey of Hope Kick-Off

The 2021 Journey of Hope North team will depart for Napa and their first day of cycling on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at 7:30 a.m. from the Golden Gate Bridge Visitors’ Center near Fort Point National Historic Site. The team will be departing by 8:00 a.m. If you are interested in joining us for kick-off, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to allow plenty of time to arrive and take photos prior to the team’s departure.
*Please note that kick-off details are subject to change based on possible COVID-19 restrictions in place by California and/or the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Bay Area is a wonderful place full of history and things to do. Below are some local attractions in San Francisco and surrounding areas:

Hotel Accommodations

Parents and family are responsible for booking their own accommodations while in the Bay Area. Team member accommodations are provided by The Ability Experience.

South Route

Most family and friends take this time to see some of the different sites around greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Crew Travel Information

Journey of Hope South Crew Members must arrive at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) for Crew Training no later than 1:00 p.m. PST on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Transportation from SBA Airport to camp will be provided.

Cyclist Travel Information

Cyclists on the South route must arrive at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) for the Team Orientation no later than 2:00 p.m. PST on Monday, June 14, 2021. Anyone driving or arriving prior to June 14 should report directly to San Marcos Camp (5750 Stagecoach Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93105) in Santa Barbara by 3:00 p.m. PST on Monday, June 14, 2021. Directions provided by camp.

Journey of Hope Kick-Off

The 2021 Journey of Hope South team will depart for Thousand Oaks and their first day of cycling on Thursday, June 17 from Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara.  The team will do their morning circle up and will be departing around 8:00 a.m. If you are interested in joining us for kick-off, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to allow plenty of time to take photos prior to the team’s departure.
